Location — Penha, above Faro
The house is on Rua da Amendoeira, at the top of Penha, a residential slope north of the centre of Faro. From the fifth floor you get the serra — the inland hills — on one side and the sea on the other, and at night you get the town lit up below. That same hill explains everything else: the quiet, the parking space at the door, and the 1.6 km between this door and the old town.

Why the house is up here
Penha is a neighbourhood of people who live in Faro rather than people who visit it. No queues, no tuk-tuks, no terrace music until two in the morning. Flats, wide streets, a minimarket, three neighbourhood restaurants and a view no hotel in the centre can have, because down there nothing is tall enough for it.
If what you want is to step out of your room and land in the old town, stay in the old town — we would rather say that than sell you the wrong thing. If what you want is to end the day on a terrace looking at the serra, sleep with the window open and not pay for parking, you want to be up here.
From the airport to the door
Faro airport is around 7 km away — roughly ten minutes by car, without crossing the centre. That's why the house works for late arrivals, long layovers and dawn departures: entry is self-service, by code, at any hour after 15:00, with no reception to reach before it closes.
By taxi or ride-hailing the trip is short and direct. In a hire car it is all urban road and it ends on a street where there is always space.
Getting to the old town
It is 1.6 km to the centre of Faro and 2.1 km to the Arco da Vila, the gate into the old town. On foot, allow twenty to twenty-five minutes: downhill on the way, uphill on the way back — and the hill is real, particularly at midday in July. By car or taxi it is a few minutes.
What a lot of guests end up doing: walk down in the late afternoon, eat in town, come back by taxi, and have the last drink on the terrace instead of in a bar. It costs less and the view is better.
Trains and the rest of the Algarve
Faro train station is 2.1 km away. From there the line runs east to Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, and west to Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos — the whole Algarve is a single railway and Faro sits in the middle of it. It is what makes this house work as a base for a week without repacking.
Eating up here
Within a 300 to 450 metres walk there are three neighbourhood places: Churrasqueira da Penha, Valdoce, Doce Algarvio. They feed the people who work next door, at neighbourhood prices rather than seafront ones.
There is a minimarket on site — enough for breakfast, for the evening bottle, and for whatever you forgot. The shared kitchen does the rest.
Beach, ria and islands
Praia de Faro and Ilha da Barreta are about 9 km away. The Ria Formosa starts just below the town: the island boats leave from it, and it is what you can see, in the distance, from the terrace.
With a car, the entire coast between Tavira and Albufeira is under an hour.
If you are here for work or study
Penha is also the university campus and hospital neighbourhood, both a few minutes from the door. A good share of our low-season guests are here for one or the other — and the shared kitchen, the washing machine and the free parking are what make a multi-day stay work.
Parking
On the street, free, no reservation. It is a residential area and there is room; you do not need to warn us you are driving and you do not need a car park. In the centre of Faro, the same car costs money every day and circles the block first.
